Equipment plays a huge role in any operation. Whether it’s a planter, sprayer, combine or other piece of equipment, efficiency is critical to getting the job done.

Regardless of if you’ve had your equipment for one year or 10 years, knowing how to maintain it is key to keeping it running strong. Making updates as needed is always a good idea to keep your operation going, but until the time comes to replace your equipment, some simple measures can help you get the most from it.

Maintain equipment consistently

There are many factors that affect the longevity of equipment that are out of a farmers’ control. Harsh weather conditions — be it extreme heat or cold, a dusty environment, etc. — can take a toll, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

One way to avoid complications due to outside factors is to have a solid maintenance plan in place. Many warranty programs, like the Cenex® Total Protection Plan®, include maintenance schedules with periodic reminders and guidance for fuel and other checkups to help keep your equipment running at its peak.

Ensure fuel storage tanks are clean

Before you top off your tank, make sure your fuel storage tank is free of water and other contaminants that can accelerate fuel degradation and cause equipment breakdown. When contaminants make their way into the filter and engines, they can cause fuel pump failure or fuel injector plugging.

To avoid fuel storage tank contaminants, establish a process for monitoring and removing water. A few ways to do this include:

  • Regularly check your fuel tank for water
  • Follow best practices for preventing water contamination
  • Change filters consistently

Incorporate a high-quality fuel

The easiest way to ensure equipment is running well for the long-haul is to use a premium diesel fuel year-round. Using a high-quality premium diesel helps clean older engines and helps keep newer engines clean so they can operate longer.

When selecting your premium diesel, be sure to consider the right seasonal adjustments during colder months. Cenex Ruby Fieldmaster® Seasonally Enhanced contains a blend of #1 and #2 fuels and also contains an enhanced additive package that works to restore power and efficiency with fewer repairs and more uptime.
