Considering bringing your trusted — and furry — companion on the road with you? It can be an exciting thought to travel with your dog or cat, but it’s important to take the right precautions before taking the next step. Here’s a guided checklist of considerations before setting out on your road trip.

Determine your stopping points before hitting the road.

While travelling with your dog or cat, both of you will need bathroom breaks. Map out stops accordingly and make sure each location has an area for pets.

Consider purchasing car safety equipment.

Pet-friendly road trips should include safety equipment, since keeping your pet safe is a top priority. Because your pet shouldn’t sit in the front seat, consider purchasing a pet seat belt with a harness attachment or a seat divider.

Triple check your packed bag and bring extra supplies.

Remember to pack enough food, medicine, treats and toys. It’s safe to assume you’ll need to bring lots of water, too.

Prepare your car for your pet.

Make sure the child and window locks are engaged in case your pet gets too curious.

Know where to go in case of an emergency.

Map out vets along the drive in the event of an emergency. Be sure to pack your pet’s medical records as well.

As you hit the road with your furry passenger, don’t forget to stock up on road trip snacks or stop to fill up your tank along the way at a locally owned and operated Cenex location.
