Great cars and great movies seem to go together. Throughout cinematic history, movies have been written about cars and sometimes movie cars steal the spotlight from the actors. Whether they’re real cars or souped-up futuristic superhero sports cars, I’ll share some of my favorite cars throughout movie history.
The Batmobile – No list of famous movie cars could start without mention of The Batmobile. This iconic car is really what makes Batman a superhero. Unlike Superman or Spiderman, Batman doesn’t have any real superpowers of his own and relies on his gadgets to make him special. Although the Batmobile has taken different forms throughout the movies to accommodate for advances in technology, my favorite is the original. Featured in the television series and the 1966 movie, the original Batmobile was a customized 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. If I had a car that looked that great and had so many gadgets, I’d keep it protected in a secret cave too.
DeLorean DMC-12 – With its stainless steel and gull-wing doors, the DeLorean seems like a great vehicle for traveling through time, as in Back to the Future. The DeLorean has a classic ‘80s look, perfect for the ‘80s cult classic movie. It almost looks as goofy as the character Doc Brown does throughout the movie. Almost. The DeLorean DMC-12 was the only model produced by the DeLorean Motor Company and has become a collector’s item.
1968 Ford Mustang GT – Featured in Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen, this car inspired many imitations. With its long hood and impressive power, the Ford Mustang is best remembered for its part in the movie’s famous car chase scene, although some might argue that the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T that Frank Bullitt chases in his Mustang is the better car. I’ll leave that up to you to decide.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – This is likely one of the first instances where a movie’s plot, derived from a book of the same title, is completely centered on a car. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a fictional, magical car that can travel on land, water and fly in the air. The movie car itself was not one, but six cars, each modified to fit the scene it would be used in. The car used the most was a specially designed GEN 11 made just for the movie. It still makes public appearances.
1963 Aston Martin DB5 – I’ve saved the best for last. No movie car list is complete without mention of the Aston Martin DB5. James Bond’s classic, iconic, beautiful Italian-made car is arguably one of the most famous in the world. Just take a look at it and you’ll know why.
