As the nation’s largest cooperative refiner, CHS owns and operates a 55,000-barrel-per day refinery at Laurel, Mont., and is the majority owner of the National Cooperative Refinery Association’s 85,000-barrel-per-day refinery at McPherson, Kan. Through these two refineries, we produce more than 5.9 million gallons of fuel each day. We have recently boosted our ability to secure North American crude oil for these refinery operations by establishing a Canadian office in Calgary, Alberta.
Stringent quality control standards at our refineries ensure the high quality of our fuels, while ongoing upgrades maximize efficiency, stretch valuable energy resources and help protect the environment. Our Montana refinery was one of the first in the country to reach the federally mandated ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) requirement.
We recently initiated an elective $325 million coker installation at our Montana refinery, along with other improvements that will increase yields 14 percent by squeezing more gasoline and diesel fuel out of every barrel of crude oil.
CHS is committed to helping upgrade the refined fuels distribution system, as well. Our refined fuels products move through 1,200 miles of pipeline, 10 terminals, over 250 third party terminals, and a truck fleet logging nearly 35 million miles annually. To reduce bottlenecks on all fuels traveling through the Rocky Mountain region, we have helped add storage at petroleum terminals and enhance rail capacity in the area.
