We recommend following COVID-19 prevention guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Those suggestions include taking simple steps to protect you and your customers from spreading infection, such as avoiding handshakes, washing your hands, wearing disposable gloves if you handle cash and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

One important step: Encourage employees to wear plastic or vinyl gloves while cashiering. The gloves should be changed often. If you choose not to wear gloves, wash your hands regularly and use sanitizing gel.

Also, see this article: “How can’t close retailers are keeping workers safe,” from the Harvard Business Review.

Sanitize the following surfaces with wipes often

  • Entry door, cooler door, checkout area countertops and restroom door handles
  • Drink stations where customers are apt to touch countertops
  • Store phones and intercom systems
  • Keyboards and PIN pads
  • Increase the frequency of cleaning food prep serving equipment and high-touch surfaces throughout the store.
  • Review your current food handling safety and store cleanliness procedures.

Cleaning: POS equipment should be gently cleaned with water using a lightly damp microfiber cloth. Do not spray water directly onto equipment. Do not use solvents, detergents, brushes with hard bristles, or abrasive cleaners.*

Disinfecting: After cleaning, equipment may be disinfected using a wipe or cleaner applied to a microfiber cloth. Do not spray, coat or pour any disinfectant or other liquid directly onto equipment. Recommended disinfecting agents:

  • Simple Green ® All Purpose Cleaner
  • CAF® OTIS Super Concentrate Multi Surface Cleaner
  • Windex® Ammonia-Free
  • Dawn® Ultra Platinum Dishwashing Liquid
  • Simoniz® Tru Blue Liquid Cleaner

*The use of bleach, thinner, trichloroethylene, or ketone-based solvents can deteriorate plastic, rubber, and dispensers. Damage caused due to the use of improper disinfecting agents or practices will not be covered under warranties.

See information and resources from NACS, including a downloadable checklist, to ensure pumps and high-touch areas like key pads are safe for customers.

Employees should follow CDC guidance for how to proceed after potential exposure and consult their health care provider. You should encourage employees who do not feel well to not come to work.
