Why Borderline Chalkfest earned its spot among the best

As one of only a few finalists in the 2025 Cenex Hometown Throwdown, Borderline Chalkfest stood out for its bold mix of professional artistry, community participation, and inclusive spirit. The event is free to attend, family-focused, and completely powered by local energy—volunteers, small businesses, and neighbors working side by side to create something lasting.

At Cenex, we look for festivals that do more than entertain—we honor those that reflect the heart of the community. Borderline Chalkfest checked every box and then some.

Powered locally, painted boldly

Borderline Chalkfest brings in around 15 professional chalk artists from around the country—but it also makes space for anyone to contribute. With buckets of chalk provided and entire city blocks reserved for creative expression, it’s a true “festival of participation.”

Add in a high-energy 5K color run, hands-on art activities for kids, food trucks, and live music, and it’s clear why this festival is such a vibrant reflection of the Wahpeton–Breckenridge community.

How Cenex® is helping take it to the next level

As a Hometown Throwdown finalist, Borderline Chalkfest received funding to continue growing this incredible event. That means more chalk for budding artists, improved access to materials, and expanded zones for family art and activities.

We believe in giving back to the communities that fuel us. Whether it’s powering your next road trip with our locally owned gas stations or supporting the festivals that make your town special, we’re proud to be part of it.

What’s next for Borderline Chalkfest? Even more color.

Thanks to this recognition and support, festival organizers are already dreaming bigger. From artist-led workshops to enhanced color run features, 2026 promises to be the most colorful year yet.
